Great Independent walking holidays throughout The Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park , Highland Perthshire , Western Isles of Scotland and the West Highland Way
At Hooked on Walking Holidays our walking holidays in Scotland are based in what we think is one of Scotland’s most beautiful regions. Our two walking holidays and based in Scotland’s first National Park. Both our walking holidays in Scotland are available as independent walking holidays only. The Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park can easily be reached from Edinburgh and Glasgow in a hour by train or car and yet in the heart of mountains , lochs and Castles. Unlike the North western regions and true Highlands of Scotland this region is dryer. Our walking holidays can be taken from April through to October but the warmest months being June July and August. Our 3rd walking tour is Island hopping across the western isles of Arran , Islay and Jura. Lastly we have a fabulous tour along the West Highland way.
West Highland Way - A 8 night - Level 3 walking tour The West Highland Way was Scotland’s first official long distance route. Originally conceived in the 1960s, it was completed in October 1980. The Way links Milngavie to Fort William – a distance of 152km (95 miles) - from the outskirts of Scotland’s largest city to the foot of its highest mountain, following the shores of its largest freshwater loch, Loch Lomond. Much of the Way follows ancient and historic routes of communication, and makes use of Drove Roads, Military Roads and Disused Railway Tracks The trail passes from the lowlands, across the Highland Boundary Fault and on into the Scottish Highlands, bascially from city to wilderness. The West Highland Way passes through a wide range of different terrains, ranging from lowland moors, through dense woodland and rolling hills, to high mountainous regions. This variety of environments provides habitats for a diverse range of wildlife species, both flora and fauna. Some species are more common than others and some are rarely seen. If you are lucky enough to spot one of the rarer varieties, consider yourself privileged
Rob Roy Way - 7 night independent walking holiday level 2-3
Our walking route transverses the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park. It is approx. 120 km long and can be walked in 7 nights from west to east. The general route can be seen on the map below. The Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park was formed a Scotland’s first National Park in 2003. The Trossachs region to the east of the National Park is the so called ‘ Rob Roy McGregor ‘ country. Rob Roy a so called Local Hero in some historians eyes and a villain in others roamed the Trossachs countryside. He is buried only a few miles from the route and a short detour can take you to his small grave in a tiny church graveyard. The region is filled with tales of his actions centuries ago. The region also has many great Lochs , Venachar , Lubnaig , Earn and Tay to name a few. The longest day is 18 miles , a fare challenge but this can be reduced by transfer if required. The tour finishes in Highland Perthshire.
Lochs Glens and Benns 7 Night Independent walking holiday level 2
Exploring the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park in a circular route. This walking on the tour are a little shorter than the Transverse tour above and in that sense is more suitable for a first time walking holiday or even for families.
Island Trek - 7 Night Independent walking holiday - level 2
This hiking holiday takes you through the Isle of Arran , Islay and Jura. One of Scotland’s greatest scenic assets are its famous Western Isles. Often very remote , often a haven for wildlife and bird life , often very little explored by the tourist due to the lack of accommodation, limits the numbers of people who can visit. Our tour starts off on the Isle of Arran just off the west coast of Scotland and easily reached from Glasgow’s airports by train. Arran is known as Scotland in Miniature , this is so because the scenery has all that the whole of Scotland is famous for , dramatic coastlines of the west coast of Scotland , mountains and glens and rolling pastures to the south , mountains ( highest 950m) . After three days on Arran we have a day transferring to the Isle of Islay. Islay is a Whisky lovers paradise. The clean waters and air have made it a classic location for many famous malts. Such names as Oban, Isle of Jura, Bunnahahain, bruichladdich, Laphroaic, Ardbeg, Bowmore to name but a few. We take a days trip onto the Isle of Jura which is extremely remote, certainly here there is more wildlife than people and fabulous to do some bird watching. Our last day is a fabulous day walking on Islay
