Welcome to Hooked on Walking holidays and our walking holidays in Austria. This hiking vacation in Austria is a level 3 self guided walking tour following a thousand year old trail. From boundary mark to boundary mark through the foothills of the Alps you walk on Salzburg’s Jacob’s Trail, Rupert’s Winkl and past high mountains into the Alps. The former clerical state Salzburg always welcomed pilgrims and treated them very well. Interesting ecclesiastical sites, charming countryside and impressive walks contribute to a relaxing and reviving self guided walking holiday. You will walk on quiet country roads, forest trails and walking trails. The 'pre-alps' region around Salzburg is a lovely landscape of gentle hills, little farmhouses, very small villages and lakes. Beyond Salzburg you are among the German mountains, following a river trail and walking over little passes. The daily walks are sometimes quite long (6 hours walking) but there are almost no significant ascents and some days are short enough to enable you to visit places of particular interest. Some experience of self guided walking useful but there are plenty of possibilities to take the bus or train to shorten the walks.
Walking holiday in Austria

Day 1       Individual arrival at Seekirchen on Lake Wallersee

Day 2       By train to Oberhofen – Eugendorf 23 kms/14.4 miles
By train you reach the border, where Salzburg’s Jacobs Trail starts. First you walk past soft green hills down to Lake Wallersee. Follow it to Eugendorf.

Day 3       Eugendorf – Salzburg 14 kms/8.75 miles Jacob Trail hiking vacation
Distant mountains are greeting the pilgrim and pointing to the destination. A comfortable walk brings you downhill to Salzburg, where a wealth of churches and ecclesiastical monuments wait to be discovered. A detour to Maria Plain, a baroque pilgrim church towering high over Salzburg is worth the effort.

Day 4       Salzburg – Großgmain/Bad Reichenhall 18 kms/11.25 miles
Across the city you walk into the direction of mount Untersberg. At little town Großgmain you cross the German border to Rupert’s Winkl and afterwards you reach the Bavarian salt metropolis Bad Reichenhall.

Day 5       Bad Reichenhall – Unken 17 kms/10.6 miles.
Today you follow the river Saalach back into the country of Salzburg. Past Lake Salzachsee you walk deeper and deeper into the mountains. The hiking path partly follows the river bank, sometimes wildly gushing through steep rock walls.

Day 6       Unken – Waidring/St. Ulrich 26 kms/16.25 miles
At first you follow the river Saalach into the widening valley around Lofer. The mountaiHiking in Austrian village Lofer could retain the original charm. In front of you the steep rocks of mountain range Loferer Steinberge seem to scrape the sky. You cross on Strubpass into Tyrol.

Day 7       Waidring/St. Ulrich – St. Johann 16 kms/10 miles
According to route you walk on the dyke path to St. Johann or past Lake Pillersee and St. Jacob’s church to St. Johann.
