Welcome to Hooked on Walking holidays and our walking holidays in Austria . This hiking vacation in Austria is a level 3 self guided walking tour following a thousand year old trail. From boundary mark to boundary mark through the foothills of the Alps you walk on Salzburg’s Jacob’s Trail, Rupert’s Winkl and past high mountains into the Alps. The former clerical state Salzburg always welcomed pilgrims and treated them very well. Interesting ecclesiastical sites, charming countryside and impressive walks contribute to a relaxing and reviving self guided walking holiday. You will walk on quiet country roads, forest trails and walking trails. The 'pre-alps' region around Salzburg is a lovely landscape of gentle hills, little farmhouses and very small villages, and lakes. Beyond Salzburg you are among the German mountains, following a river trail and walking over little passes. The daily walks are sometimes quite long (6 hours walking) but there are almost no significant ascents and some days are short enough to enable you to visit places of particular interest. Some experience of self-guided walking useful but there are plenty of possibilities to take the bus or train to shorten the walks.
